New course for beginning dancers!

Students have always been able to take beginning or open level dance technique classes, such as ballet or jazz or hip-hop or flamenco, for Physical Education credit…and you still can!  But interested students now also have a way to take intro or open level courses for academic credit.  It takes more commitment as you will have to take 2 technique courses per semester but these courses generally meet from 1.5 to 2 hours per week, so the time commitment is still within the 3-4 hours per week range. Here is how it works:

ARTD B138 001 or 002: Introduction to Dance Techniques I
Students select one full semester of elementary modern (section 001) or ballet (section 002) and, concurrently, another full semester of technique selected from from approved Dance Program courses.  This may be a full semester course, for example African, or two half-semester courses, for
example, Movement Improv and Salsa.  Before enrolling, students must get approval of class selection from the Dance Program. The schedule of dance technique courses is listed on the Dance Program website and, at the beginning of each semester, on VRO under Physical Education. In addition, students must attend two mandatory lectures (TBA) over the course of the semester and one live dance performance and write short responses to all three. Course offered on a Pass/Fail basis only for .5 academic credit.
Division III: Humanities

ARTD B139 Introduction to Dance Techniques II
This course continues the introduction to dance techniques. Students select one full semester of elementary modern (section 001) or ballet (section 002) and, concurrently, another full semester of technique selected from approved Dance Program courses (See ARTD B 138 for further description). Before enrolling, students must get approval of class selection from the Dance Program. The schedule of dance technique courses is listed on the Dance Program website and at the beginning of each semester on VRO under Physical Education. Additional requirements include attendance at and critique of one live dance event and a short writing assignment on a topic selected in consultation with the faculty coordinator. Course offered on a Pass/Fail basis only for .5 academic credit. Prerequisite: ARTD B 138.  Division III: Humanities.

The Art of Isadora Duncan/ master class and lecture – Tuesday, October 4

photograph by Arnold Genthe

Bryn Mawr will be the site of an unusual pair of events related to the life and art of Isadora Duncan, the renowned dancer who was a seminal figure in early modern dance. Alice Bloch, a dance historian based in St. Louis, will be visiting Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, Oct. 4 to give a master class in Duncan technique from 4:00 – 5:30 in the Pem Studio. Following that she will present a talk and performance at 7:00 in the Goodhart Music Room called “Dancing the SuperMom” on Duncan’s radical reimaging of motherhood in the early decades of the 20th century.

These events are part of a week of Duncan workshops and presentations by Alice Bloch in the Philadelphia area open to bi-college students. She will be giving a talk in a dance history class at nearby Eastern University on Wednesday morning, Oct. 5, and a master class at Drexel University in West Philadelphia on Friday morning, Oct. 7. On Thursday, Oct. 6 Duncan practitioner Lori Belilove will bring her company to perform at Drexel at 7 pm. All venues are accessible by public transportation. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to understand one of the groundbreaking artists in 20th century dance.

Making work. . .Levi Gonzalez

Levi GonzalezLEVI GONZALEZ AND SUSAN MAR LANDAU
At Bryn Mawr . . .discussing the new work intimacy
Thursday, October 6
2:30 PM PEM STUDIO

You’re invited to join our Composition I class in a discussion and demonstration (and, possibly, some participation) with choreographer, Levi Gonzalez, and Dramaturg, Susan Landau about the work they have been doing while developing Gonzalez’s most recent solo work, intimacy.

Levi Gonzalez is a choreographer and performer whose own work and collaborations have been presented by various NYC venues, including Movement Research, Dance Theater Workshop, and Danspace Project. He has performed extensively including his work with Donna Uchizono Company and John Jasperse Company. He has been selected for several prestigious grants, fellowships, and residencies in support of his work and for 5 years he served as a founding editor for Critical Correspondence, an online publication of Movement Research. He is currently an Artist in Residence at Brooklyn Arts Exchange and serves as the artistic advisor for DTW’s Fresh Tracks Residency Program.

His solo, intimacy, developed in collaboration with dramaturg Susan Mar Landau, explores the idiosyncrasies of his own interests in movement and performance, building structure that exposes his own personal relationship to the form. Often framing the action with language, he establishes a directness with the spectator that resists metaphor, while still leaving space for the engagement of the imagination. Ultimately the work examines the intimacy of the relationship between performer and audience, and how we navigate this shared experience. intimacy, along with works by Christina Zani and Headlong Dance Theatre, will be performed at the Christ Church Neighborhood House in Philadelphia on October 8th and 9th. Student tickets are $10 for the performance. www.birdbirdbird.org

Introducing two new faculty instructors:

Anne White & Laura Vriend

Anne White will teach Ballet II on Tues/Thurs from 12:45 – 2:15. She started dancing when she was 6 years old in Shrub Oak, NY and at age 11 was accepted into the School of American Ballet in New York City where she trained until 1988 when she joined The Off Center Ballet directed by Christopher D’Amboise. In 1990 Anne joined The Pennsylvania Ballet, performing for eight seasons and dancing lead roles in ballets by George Balanchine, Peter Martins, Paul Taylor, and Alvin Ailey. Anne has also worked with many local artists including Myra Bazell, Pig Iron Theater, Rennie Harris, Melanie Stewart, and Phrenic Ballet. Anne has taught ballet technique and repertory at Rowan University and Drexel University.

and. . .

Laura Vriend will teach Dance Composition I on Tues/Thurs afternoons from 2:15 – 3:45. She is a doctoral candidate in Critical Dance Studies at the University of California at Riverside. She is putting the final touches on her dissertation which mines the relationship between social theories of space and choreographic uses/ideas of space in the site-based work of several Philadelphia area choreographers. Laura graduated in 2005 from Bryn Mawr with a double major in Dance and Anthropology. Throughout her graduate work, she has continued performing her own work and that of other choreographers at various venues in California, Texas, and Philadelphia

We also welcome Dr. Toni Shapiro-Phim back for her second
year at Bryn Mawr to teach Anthropology of Dance, a course that has not been taught for the last few years and that will also be cross-listed with the Anthropology Department. Dr. Shapiro-Phim is a dance ethnologist with a specialization in the performing arts of Southeast Asia. She received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Cornell University in 1994. Her dissertation and other publications focus on the history and cultural context of dance around the world, particularly in relation to violence and gender concerns. At the Philadelphia Folklore Project and at Khmer Arts in Cambodia, she designed and implemented public arts, educational and documentation programs in diverse settings. She has held teaching and research appointments at the University of California at Berkeley, San Jose State University, Yale and Mills College, and has served as a consultant for the Asia Society, Japan Foundation, and New England Folklife Project. Anthropology of Dance will be offered on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:45 pm.

tabithainformalsm

Tabitha Performance Group is a student directed dance project founded in 1999 by Emily Harney and Amanda Eicher and as another student director, Jess Hoing, reminded us “…a group named after and inspired by misidentification.”

Each year, the responsibility for directing the group is handed down within the Dance Program as a ‘May Day Gift’  to a rising senior or seniors who demonstrate particular interest in and talent for direction and choreography.  This choreographer, working with a faculty mentor, then takes responsibility for a full evening of work or invites student colleagues to contribute to the performance.  Directors are also responsible for all things surrounding the performance from budget applications to costumes to reception treats.

This year three seniors are participating – Marina and Marie will present their own choreography and Crystal will be performing in a work set on her by one of our Dance faculty, Becky Malcolm-Naib.
