FLOOR BARRE MASTER CLASS with RHONDA MOORE

What’s a floor barre?. . .Yes, you do it lying on the floor BUT it’s an intense workout, demanding full concentration on the exercises and can actually allow for better alignment and muscle work  and more sensitivity than when you are vertical in space. . .Yes, it’s called a ‘barre’ but it’s not just about ballet.  You will work through a variety of movement exercises focusing on the central body core as the original life source, gaining enhanced body control, strength, fluidity and suppleness for improved alignment and maximum joint and limb flexibility.

Rhonda Moore’s floor barre class stems from her 30 years of developing special breathing exercises for dancers, speakers, actors & vocal artists.  Her focus on the Effort\Shape theories of Laban help to clarify, mentally and visually, the ideas behind practical application. This permits each person to reach his or her full potential while elaborating the personal imagery necessary to truly master his/her physical and mental self.  If you have a yoga/pilates mat (or good towel), bring it.  The Dance Program will provide mats for anyone who does not have one.

Although having some dance vocabulary under your belt would be useful, this is a good workout that is suitable for dancers, actors, movers of all sorts who feel they are coming into the workshop in reasonably good physical shape.

Peter Kyle Master Class and Film Showing

nik2Thursday, October 28th

Master Class,  4-5:30 PM
Pem Dance Studio, Bryn Mawr

Film Showing  and Discussion of Alwin Nikolais’ work,  6:30PM
Goodhart Music Room

Open to intermediate level dancers and above.  Dancers who are not from Bryn Mawr or Haverford should call to reserve a space:  610-526-5208.

This year is the centennial of the birth of modern dance pioneer ALWIN NIKOLAIS who was acclaimed for his early use of multi-media (he was a wizard in lighting, set and costume design, a composer as well as a choreographer) and his interest in pure motion as an expressive tool.  To celebrate Nikolais’ work and to physically experience some significant 20th century dance history we have invited New York dancer/choreographer Peter Kyle to do a two-part workshop on Nikolais.  Kyle will teach a master class in the Nikolais approach on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 4:00 – 5:30 in the Pem studio (in the place of Modern III), and will follow that with a talk and screening of Nik’s choreography at 6:30 in the Goodhart Music Room.  Don’t miss this chance to physically experience, see and hear about this fascinating chapter in 20th century dance.

Drawing on years of experience as a performer with some of the world’s premier modern dance companies including Nikolais & Murray Louis Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, and Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Peter Kyle formed his own company in 2006 and  has received numerous grants and awards to support his work in both choreography and performance. He is also a highly regarded teacher, both nationally and internationally.  Peter will be teaching a class in the style of Alwinpeterkyle1061 Nikolais, an important US choreographer and a pioneer in multi-media dance artistry.  Nik developed his technique after studying with Hanya Holm who was, in turn, a student of Mary Wigman, a founder of modern German Expressionist dance. The focus of the technique is on motion–the qualities and shape of motion and motion in and through space.  This Fall, we celebrate the centenary of Nik’s birth.

Dancing through Death: The monkey, magic, and madness of Cambodia

thavrodancingsm1

Film showing and discussion with Thavro Phim -October 4th, 4:15 PM, Place/TBA.

Cosponsored by the Solomon Asch Center for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict

This hour long film by Janet Gardner documents the story of Thavro Phim, who came of age under the Pol Pot regime and lost many of his close family members to the genocide inflicted by the Khmer Rouge.  During this horrific period, nearly 90 percent of the dancers were executed or died of starvation or disease. His Buddhist faith and his dedication to the study, performance, and teaching of Cambodian classical dance, particularly his representation of Hanuman, the magical white monkey are key in surviving and finding his identity. The film includes footage of dance as it struggled to survive in the prisons, the refugee camps and as it emerged after the downfall of the Khmer Rouge. In the film, we also learn about Yale’s Cambodian Genocide Project and see Thavro return to Cambodia to find his remaining family and teachers.
